ITV viewers brand new drama Holding ‘a disappointment’ after just one episode

There’s only been one episode so far, but ITV viewers have already branded new drama Holding a “disappointment”.

The ITV drama is based on a Graham Norton book and has been adapted by comedian and actor Kathy Burke.

Set in Ireland, the weekly drama centres around the discovery of a body in a small community.

The cast is led by Conleth Hill, best known for his role as Varys in Game of Thrones, who plays local police sergeant PJ Collins.

It also stars Siobhan McSweeney, best known for her role in Derry Girls.

While some pointed to strange accents that don’t sound authentically Irish, others said that the show doesn’t do the book justice.

However, the show has gained a mixed reaction, with some viewers turning the show off and even calling for it to be “dumped” after just one episode.

Alan Begg said: “We’ve decided to switch this pish off and read the twitter comments instead, it’s bound to be funnier.”

Kate Williams said: “OMG what a load of rubbish that was. Managed somehow to get through 30 minutes and couldn’t stand anymore of it. The accents were hard to understand too. #Holding”

@PolygoniaSpec added: “I’m expecting Mrs bloody Brown and her boys to turn up at any moment.”

@JoSoapRoscommon was disappointed with the show, saying: “What a disappointment. I’d heard the book was good so was looking forward to it, but despite typical Irish scenery, which I liked a lot, the acting was horribly ill-fitting, more like Craggy Island seen through a bad magic-mushroom experience than a murder mystery. DumpIt [sic].”

But others jumped to defend the book that the TV series is based on.

@carolinemcgheec said: “Comments about Graham Norton are unfair, don’t judge his writing by watching this, the book is actually very good.”

Despite some viewers’ disappointment with the show, others said that they enjoyed it.

Peter Power said: “Enjoyed what I saw of #holding tonight. Has that sort of midsommer murders pace with a charicaturian slant on a small village managing a small problem.”

@Anagram_60 added: “#Holding is hilarious and I don’t get the bad reviews on here.”

Holding continues next Monday at 9pm on ITV.
