Gavin & Stacey… three little words that will chase the cast and creators of the TV hit for as long as fans continue to obsess over it – and that’ll be for at least another decade or more.
Every time they appear in the spotlight you can guarantee interviewers (and I’ve been guilty of this too) are asking that big question on everyone’s lips: “Is there going to be a comeback?”
But let’s be honest, we need to give it a rest. The constant quizzing of James Corden, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon, Joanna Page, Matt Horne and more results in the same answer – they don’t know!
Well apart from possibly co-creators Corden and Jones that is – and if and when they are ready to share something concrete about the return of the popular BBC comedy then you can guarantee there will be an all-guns-blazing official announcement to the world.

At the moment, the cast won’t tell us even if they have had the phone call from Jones and Corden and when the Christmas special of 2019 was in the pipeline after a decade-long break the writers, who play Smithy and Nessa, kept their writing seshes top secret from everyone.
You can guarantee that if ever Cardiff-based Jones boards a plane to America, where Corden is based, in the future, the bookies’ odds for another ep will be off the scale before take off.
So what do we know about a new series or another special?
Ruth has said the words: “There aren’t any plans to write anything.”
While there was a very hopeful and confident line from BBC Controller Charlotte Smith who said the show would return ‘one day’.

Joanna Page told me back in October 2020 she’d play Stacey ‘until the end of time’ and then on The One Show on Tuesday, she said something similar.
Rob Brydon has said he’d also love to do more, but now has said he’s ‘being careful’ about what he says so not to make the headlines go crazy and give fans false hope.
Of course, the reason why fans and the press are so keen on getting info on Gavin & Stacey is simply because it’s a great success story, and a bloody funny, warm show.
The phenomenon, which first aired in 2007, lay more or less dormant for a decade after the final episode (or so we thought) back in 2010.
But something was happening, more and more fans were being acquired during that time thanks to constant repeats of the Barry Island and Essex-set sitcom on TV and the addition to streaming services.
Add to those the people who loved it first time round – I remember my friends and I leaving the pub early on Christmas Eve 2008 to all watch the festive special together – and you’ve a dedicated fanship deserving of a follow-up and, champing at the bit for any nugget of information about that potentially happening.
So, when James Corden tweeted out the script for the 2019 Christmas special, the fanship went apoplectic, crowds attended the filming and I almost had a meltdown as I met the cast at the special’s preview.
It means a lot to people on a personal level, they see themselves in the characters, the quirks and it’s the kind of show that can lift people in a tough time.
So it’s understandable, especially with THAT proposal cliffhanger in the Christmas 2019 one-off episode, people want and expect more, which means myself and other interviewers won’t stop asking the question – that’s our job.
In the meantime, until they are ready, if ever, to make that much-anticipated announcement, the definitive answer is there are no plans for a comeback – right now.
