Landmark town centre Gothic revival-style church for sale but graveyard not included

Since at least 1847, if not before, this distinctive, Gothic revival-style church has dominated the area within a popular Powys market town, its tower and multiple roof pinnacles rising into the sky and demanding attention.

The visually attractive and historic church is St David’s in Newtown, Powys and according to website British Listed Buildings, the building became Grade II listed in 1988.

The history of the landmark building in the town includes its construction date thought to be between 1843-47 to the designs of Thomas Penson, a county surveyor and experienced designer, at a cost of £4,600.

Penson also designed Montgomery Prison, Llanfyllin and Caersws workhouses, and the Newtown Flannel Exchange. He was also credited with the design of bridges in Caersws, Abermule, Llanidloes and Longbridge in Newtown.

There was a further renovation in 1874 by David Walker of Liverpool at a cost of £3,000.

Now the 540sq metres building has been put on the market for offers in the region of £350,000, with extant planning permission for a children’s play centre and café/restaurant.

The interior of the church is architecturally stunning with a large roof area, inner hall, former nave and aisles. A pay and display car park can be accessed at the rear of the church, along with Newtown Railway Station.

According to website Coflein, the church design includes aisles with six bays, polygonal arcade piers rising to pointed, decoratively moulded arches below cusped king-post and tie beam roof.

The site goes on to state the church also includes a notably theatrical stained glass memorial to Queen Victoria dating back to 1902.

The church closed in 2006 with the furnishings removed. However, parts of a historic rood screen and ornamental partition, some of which dated back to the 1500s, were moved to Llanllwchaiarn’s St Llwchaiarn Church in 2011.

The church was granted planning permission to Grandstand Leisure Limited in 2006 to be converted into a child’s play barn with restaurant/cafe.

Standing majestically above surrounding areas, the church is a major landmark in the town and so thought to have an excellent location for a future business.

If a play barn and cafe is not the desire for a potential new owner, they could convert it for other business opportunities, subject to achieving planning approval, of course.

The front gates lead into the town centre, including local offices, retail, and recreational areas. A pay and display car park can be accessed at the rear of the church, along with Newtown Railway Station.

Andrew Turner, a partner at estate agents Morris, Marshall and Poole, said the sale of St David’s Church provides a unique opportunity for a business venture in Powys.

He says: “The church is prominently located in the centre of Newtown alongside the former A483 trunk road and next to Newtown Railway Station, car parks and other amenities. Its location makes it ideal for a range of uses.

“It currently has extant planning permission for a children’s play barn/centre business and this could be ideal for someone looking to start their own business or wanting to expand into Powys’ largest town.

“The current owners purchased the property in 2010 and have maintained it throughout.

“We’re anticipating interest from people looking to develop some form of enterprise at the church. It offers a blank canvas for someone with innovative ideas. It could easily be used for a range of uses subject to planning approval.”

The surrounding churchyard is owned by the local diocese and does not come with the sale of the church but allows access for the public at reasonable times.

St David’s Church is on the market for a guide price of £350,000 with the Newtown branch of Morris Marshall & Poole, give them a call on 01686 626160 to find out more.
